Gentle physical touch is a great way to get your adoptive animal familiar with you. The close contact will allow them to sense your love as well as learn your unique scent. One method that works great for cats is “affection eating.” Unlike dogs who typically prefer to be left alone with their meal, you may notice your cat happily welcoming light strokes while they enjoy their food.

Use their name.

Once you’ve picked a perfect name for your adopted animal friend, it’s time to use it. The best method to get your animal used to their new name to use it often. Don’t be shy! Start calling them by their new name as soon as they are officially “yours.”

Create and stick to a schedule.

Animals are similar to humans in that getting accustomed to a schedule helps bring them comfort. Think about how nervous you may have felt before learning the ins and outs of a new job or school. A schedule can include your morning routine, feeding, walks, and bedtime. Once your animal friend knows the schedule, they’ll often be the one to hold you to it!

Enjoy playtime.

What greater way to make a friend than to play? This is an excellent opportunity to try out new toys and see what your animal friend prefers. However, toys aren’t the only way to have playtime. Playing games like hide-and-go-seek, racing, and even just rolling on the floor can do the trick to getting your new companion out of their shell.

Be patient.

Like most relationships, it’s best not to rush things. Your animal friend will be getting used to you as their new guardian as well as to their new surroundings and schedule. See each day with them as a fun opportunity to get to know each other better. In time they will grow to love you, as you will grow to love them.
